From our House to Yours

Helping give sick children what they need most…their families

  • It's a small world...

Last night I had the opportunity to speak at a School Council meeting in Niagara Falls. I am reaching out to schools in the areas where our families are from, in the hopes that they will support us. This school has supported us in the past and I was grateful for the chance to bring them up to speed on what we're up to and to speak with them about fundraising ideas.

When I arrived at the meeting, I was introduced to one of the other presenters who happened to be one of our past families! She stayed here when ...

  • Thanks Baby Expo!

I know I've written about this event a few times already, but I wanted to take this chance to say THANK YOU to everybody that was involved with the Hamilton Baby Expo on Saturday. I was there in the morning and the place was a zoo! The vendors were great and our volunteers had a fabulous time talking to the attendees and handing out information on the House.

There's already talk of another Baby Expo being organized for the fall... I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again to Monica and everybody at Social Mamas and My Smart Hands for your generous ...

  • My volunteer Pat...

Today I've had the pleasure of working alongside one of my favourite volunteers and I wanted to use my 'blog time' to send out a special thank you to her.

Pat has been a volunteer since the House opened in 1993 and keeps us laughing with her jokes and hilarious stories about her family and friends. She's never afraid to take on a challenging task and provides us with feedback and suggestions about the many projects we are often juggling at once.

We couldn't run this House without our volunteers like Pat. She folds, stuffs, seals, calls and inputs data ...

  • Hamilton Baby Expo

If you have a baby or are thinking about having a baby, please consider going to the Hamilton Baby Expo this Saturday (www.hamiltonbabyexpo.com). The event is being held at the Ancaster Fairgrounds and ticket proceeds are being donated to RMH Hamilton.

I've been talking to the organizers and sponsors and it's going to be a fantastic event! We will have a table set up in the front hall with a great door prize, so please come say hi.

A very special thank you to the Social Mamas for their ongoing support and to Brandi, the volunteer who put together our incredible door prize.

    Hope to ...

  • Garden of Eden keeps on giving

Here's a story that will warm your heart. Garden of Eden, a Hamilton landscaping company, was scheduled to provide dinner in our Home for Dinner program on Saturday night. They called a volunteer on Saturday morning to say that a family member had been taken to hospital and they could not come in to prepare dinner.

Instead, they ordered pizza and had it delivered to the house at 6 p.m. to ensure that our families had dinner that night. This is the sort of commitment we receive from our community. It is so inspiring to think that our supporters care ...

  • Congratulations Jan Lukas!

A very special congratulations to Jan Lukas on winning the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Jan was nominated for this award through the Rotary Club of Hamilton A.M.. I hope she can find some room in between the Ontario Medal of Good Citizenship, Queen's Jubilee Medal and YMCA Peace Medal that already decorate her mantel.

Anyone who knows Jan will attest to how deserving she is of this award. She began volunteering at the age of 7 with the Salvation Army and since has continued to make significant contributions to our community. She has volunteered for the United Way, Ancaster Community Food ...

  • Family Business

Our friends at Mabel's Labels are certainly creating quite a buzz!

The four women who were friends in university all happen to be related. Seven years ago, they formed a company to produce cute and indestructible labels to identify the stuff kids have - and lose. They were featured in a recent edition of Hamilton's Biz magazine - where they were recognized for winning the RBC Momentum Award at the 2009 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards Gala in Toronto. The awards recognize Canada's most outstanding women entrepeneurs and had more than 1,500 nominees last year.

Now, they have been featured in ...

  • Out of the mouths of families....

Plans are starting to heat up for the expansion of the House next year and our first User Group meeting with the architects was held this week. I always say that our families say it better than we do and how true that is. (Who knew about that dark corner under the tree on the way to the hospital??)

It is very exciting to hear the feedback from families and volunteers into what is needed in the design of the new House. And always at the core of it is staying true to our mission of providing families with safe, ...

  • The power of 'thanks'

As I've said many times before...I could fill a daily newspaper with heart-warming stories about experiences of our House.

There is no question that we see trials of deep sorrow and grief - but with that, we are also witness to incredible miracles and stories of generosity and compassion.

From the man who walks through the rain, sleet or snow just to drop off a 'special treat' each week for our families - to the child who skipped around the House just weeks after suffering a severe stroke....the stories are endless.

Just recently, I experienced another 'feel good' story that I would like ...
