Monday, June 16 was a very exciting day for us. It was the day we opened our Family Room. Our Family Room is the first in Ontario and the second in Canada.
Our Grand Opening was attended by approximately 100 people including families who will be taking advantage of the Family Room, invited guests from many areas of our community and hospital staff.
Remarks were made on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities, McMaster Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Hamilton and the City of Hamilton.
We have been very fortunate to receive a number of donations for our set up and operations of our Family Room:
- Without the generous donations from Ronald McDonald House Charities and McMaster Children’s Hospital we would not have seen our Family Room come to completion.
- Sharp Electronics has generously donated two wonderful flat panel TV’s which our families have really been enjoying.
- MegaGroup, who have an ongoing relationship with the Ronald McDonald Houses in Canada, have donated all of our appliances.
We have also had a number of generous donations from individuals for the operations of our Family Room:
- Mr. Peter Nitsopoulos and family, who have made a significant monetary donation to cover the cost of the furniture in our Family Room.
- Mr. Doug Inch and area McDonald’s owner operators who made a monetary donation to the day to day operation of our Family Room.

The Family Room is open to families from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. A full-time manager and volunteers provide support and security, ensuring the Family Room remains a comfortable and private place. Although there is no place like home when coping with an ill child, the Family Room at McMaster Children’s Hospital provides families with a small oasis of calm and normalcy in a medical setting.
